Building and Grounds

Mission:  To mobilize those with gifts and skills to be good stewards of the physical facility with which we have been entrusted.

Goals:  The goals of the organization of a Building and Grounds Ministry include:

  • Stewardship.  Scripture teaches the importance of being good managers of all that comes from the Lord, including the physical building, property, human resources, finances and time. (Matthew 25:14-30)
  • Care.  Along with a responsible use of what God has entrusted to us, we believe it is important to take care of what we have to show our respect and gratefulness to the God who gave it to us.  (James 1:17)
  • Planning and Coordination.  A centralized Building and Grounds Ministry will be able to make sensible decisions in light of a thoughtfully developed plan for the future that includes 1 year, 5 year, and 10 year goals.
  • People Development.  The Church is a Body, made of many parts.  (I Cor 12)  There are within our congregation those gifted to serve in the area of Building and Grounds, so this ministry will be a key place for their own spiritual, personal and ministry development.  We seek to mobilize those with the gift and heart to serve the Lord.
  • Support Other Ministries.  As in Acts 6, the care for physical needs by godly and responsible people will free those with other gifts to minister in their respective areas.  As well as being a ministry in itself, the Building and Grounds Ministry seeks to support the other ministries that depend on the physical resources of the church.

Composition:

The Building and Grounds Ministry is a church ministry team that supports and communicate with other ministries, including the Christian school.  This necessitates a high degree of communication with the school especially due to the extensive needs and use of the facility.  Plans for regular care and maintenance within the school ministry are closely coordinated with the Building and Grounds Ministry.  At times some on the Building and Grounds Ministry will also be on school staff.

As a ministry of the church, the pastor(s) of the church serve as overseer(s) for the Building and Grounds Ministry, but the ministry itself will most often be staffed and led by deacons and others from the congregation.  At this point the head of the ministry is a deacon, Tim Emerson.  The school principal is in regular communication with the head of the Building and Grounds Ministry.  At times it will be appropriate to bring building and grounds projects to the entire board of pastors and deacons for discussion, input, and decision on direction and extra-budgetary spending.

Projects that fall within budget for the year are at the discretion of the Building and Grounds team, with the regular process of pastoral and Finance Committee approvals.  Projects that extend beyond budget for that year are brought to the pastors and deacons for approval.  Large projects that are more than 200% of budget for that line item for that year will be brought to the congregation.

The centralization of the Building and Grounds Ministry will enable a better use of church and school resources.  In addition, the collection of professional analysis and advice by this ministry will enable wise decisions to be made with all factors considered.  Recruitment of volunteers for projects is left to up to the Building and Grounds leader.  Email Tim on the link here to volunteer for projects.  Be sure to include your areas of skill and ability.
